Forbo Flooring Systems Marmoleum FR Featured in the MONOCAB Rail Project

Unveiled to the international rail industry at InnoTrans 2026, the MONOCAB concept reimagines public transport by using lightweight, battery-powered vehicles capable of operating on existing rail infrastructure.
MONOCABs are gyro-stabilised vehicles that balance on just one rail of standard train track. They are so compact and narrow that they can pass by each other in opposite direction. Designed to provide cost-effective mobility solutions for rural communities, MONOCAB demonstrates how innovation can unlock new possibilities for sustainable transport.
The MONOCAB research project is a collaboration between the OWL University of Applied Sciences, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and Fraunhofer IOSB-INA. Under the overall project management of Prof. Dr Thomas Schulte.
Forbo Flooring's Contribution
Forbo Flooring Systems was proud to support the MONOCAB project by supplying Marmoleum FR for the vehicle interior.
Marmoleum FR was selected not only for its design versatility and lightweight construction of just 2.9 kg/m², but also for its sustainability credentials. As a climate-positive (cradle-to-gate) flooring solution, Marmoleum FR aligns perfectly with the project's focus on innovation and environmental responsibility.

The Blue Shimmer colour from the Marmoleum Concrete collection also plays an important role in the interior colour scheme. Its concrete-grey base complements the clean white surfaces of the cabin, while the subtle blue inclusions create a visual connection to the blue seat upholstery.

Why Marmoleum FR?
A natural floor covering created using a high percentage of natural raw materials, with renewable and recycled content. As part of Forbo’s Marmoleum range, it has been independently confirmed as climate positive (cradle to gate), meaning that the CO₂ absorbed by its natural ingredients during growth exceeds the emissions generated during production.
